The IN's Summer Roundup

by Sean Boone
Things You Have To Do Before the Sun Sets on This Summer

The summer is winding down, which means that it's time to map out the local events and happenings that you may have let slide beneath your nose.
From Evenings in Olde Seville Square on Thursday to Sunday "Funday" at Paradise Bar & Grill on Pensacola Beach, there is no shortage in variety for the summer of 2010. Here are the local sights, sounds and cuisine we think you'd be foolish to miss.

-- New Found Glory at Seville Quarter
Glory Days has booked another great show for downtown Pensacola. The pop-punk band New Found Glory, who co-piloted the Blink-182 era of the late '90s, will bring their high-energy show to Seville Quarter on Aug. 31.
"Pensacola is on an upswing right now, which makes me very happy," says Glory Days promoter Jonathan Parish. "Hopefully people don't take it for granted. I also hope we'll start getting more recognized in the market."
Glory Days will also feature the hard rock band Cavo on Sept. 3 at Seville Quarter.

-- The Fish House Brunch and Southern Suppers
The popular seafood restaurant has upped the ante with its already top-notch brunch menu. While you should make sure to check out the great selection of Fish House favorites Sunday mornings, starting Aug. 15 you can get a set-priced menu for dinner items.
"Beginning at 3 p.m. each Sunday, a fixed-price menu will be offered that will feature traditional Southern items with a modern touch," says Fish House spokesperson Shelley Yates. "The fixed-price plate, which costs $13.95, will feature "Meat and Two Plus a Roll": your choice of an entree, two side dishes and a fresh-baked roll (or cornbread). We think it's a tremendous value."

-- Sunday "Funday" at Paradise Bar & Grill
Live music plus drink specials on the water from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. There's no better place to dock your boat or to lie in the sand and enjoy a cocktail.

-- Evenings in Olde Seville Square, Aug. 19
This month is the conclusion of the popular outdoor event in Seville Square. Don't miss great live music with family and friends from 7-9 p.m. in one of the most historic parks downtown. The best part of it all? It's free.

-- Stitches on Canvas, Art Praha
Check out Art Praha's European Stitches on Canvas gallery. Ten original German works are on sale for the first time ever. The last viewing of these pieces is Aug. 23.

 -- Pensacola Pelicans Thirsty Thursdays
Summertime means baseball -- and cold beer. The Pelicans offer $1 draft beer every Thursday for their home games. The next "thirsty" ballgame falls on Aug. 19.

-- Paddy O'Leary's Irish Pub Car Bombs
If you've never had a Car Bomb before (Bailey's Irish Cream, whiskey and Guinness), you might as well try one at a place that embraces them as a house special. Paddy's is the only spot in town you'll find a running Car Bomb tally from locals.

-- The Bridge Bar and Sunset Lounge
There's no better place to take someone special and watch the sunset over gorgeous Pensacola Bay. The beer selection isn't too shabby, either.

 -- Palafox Market
Every summer Saturday you'll find numerous unique vendors parked in Martin Luther King Plaza on Palafox Street.

-- Bands on the Beach, Pensacola Beach Pavilion
Tuesday nights from May until September have become synonymous with large crowds and great music on Pensacola Beach. From 7-9 p.m., enjoy a wide array of local and regional artists.

 -- Jamaican Fest
The last music festival of the summer for Pensacola falls on Labor Day weekend -- Sept. 3-5 on Portofino Boardwalk.

-- Sunset Mojitos at Hemingway's Tower Bar
Every evening during the summer warrants a great time to enjoy a drink on Hemingway's deck that overlooks Quietwater Sound.

-- Stargazing on the Beach, Aug. 13-14, Sept. 17-18
The Escambia Astronomer's Association offers several nights of free stargazing. Meet at the Gulfside Pavilion on Pensacola Beach at 8 p.m.

 -- Bayview Park Yard Sale
Come search for wares, old and new, at the Bayview Community Center at 9 a.m. every Saturday during the season.

-- Sunsets at Plaza de Luna
Live music is provided by the City every Thursday in Plaza de Luna from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

-- Family Movie Night at Commendencia
Enjoy a flick with the family on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Commendencia Slip.

 -- Sandshaker Lounge Bushwacker
If you thought Bushwackers were just a Portofino Boardwalk thing during the summer -- think again. Try one from Sandshaker Lounge, and see what you've been missing.
