At least one outside observer of local politics thinks the resignation of Mike Whitehead as Escambia County Commission chairman is a good thing.
Stephen Nodine, Mobile County Commission President, says he believes the elevation of Gene Valentino from vice chairman to chairman will help Escambia County's economic development and transportation improvement issues.
"I think it's a very positive move for Escambia County," says Nodine, who has worked closely with Valentino to rally regional support for Mobile's $40 billion Tanker deal. "I'm a big believer in regionalism. Ray Sansom, Don Salter and Gene Valentino believe in regionalism. There's no reason we can't work together collectively to enhance our economies."
Nodine says he and Valentino have talked about building a monorail system between Pensacola and Mobile, busing, better roads and other transportation ideas.
"Gene is a visionary," Nodine says. "You have to have great leadership. That's how you put it all together."
